I feel like I had abandoned this blog! This school year has given us gifts and challenges. The trick is to value the gifts long enough that the joy helps you in the challenges!

So far we're doing well!

T has been working at a steady pace and is on track for straight A's. Yes, we are giving report cards this year. I think 5th grade is ok for this.

V has another concussion. But his varsity made it all the way to the State Semi's! They were one game away from playing at M & T Bank stadium!

The family spent Thanksgiving in our favorite place..... Ocean City, MD. It was a great time to relax! Especially since we were treated to a VIP suite at the Princess Royale!

Hope to update this blog more as time permits.

We've started back to homeschool, I have a 5th grader and an upper-classman in high school who also made the varsity, football team! Oh and I am VP of the PTSA, how's that for odd??

We've already been on a few field trips, seen a couple of football games and done several experiments!

This year is looking very promising!!

Fresh Salsa

Since I began making homemade salsa I have ruined us for store-bought! Ther is now no turning back!

This batch was because our pastor blessed us today with tomatoes and peppers! MMMMM!

There is no comparison for fresh, is there? No matter what it is; food, smell of fresh-cut grass, how about the freshness of God's love? Yes, God's love!

He renews it everyday in those who would call him King and His Son, Jesus their Savior. His blessings are numerous and His love is FRESH!

Winding down the summer

We've pretty much stayed close to home this summer. We have one more road trip to Six Flags and then we gear up to begin our studies once again! August 15th to be exact!

This year we a blessed to, again, be using Story of the World-Volume II-The Middle Ages; we will be walking through the Bible beginning in Genesis; reviewing many Math concepts and touching on Algebra; learning about various sports while increasing our walking miles and delving in to why God created the things He did.

T is very excited and although he is in no rush to get back to studies, he looks forward to learning so that he can fulfill his dream of being a scientist/inventor!

May this year bring all of our students knowledge and the chance to witness for the Lord.

This summer has been riddled with trials, tribulations, tests, blessings and humidity! I'm not complaining, just commenting.

Last week our home's AC unit died. It was a test that I will never forget. I grew up in the city where humidity reigned supreme from June to September, where our row house (townhouse or you rich people) was cooled by open windows and ONE window fan that was pointed directly at my father! One of my must-haves when I went out on my own was to not only have my fill of Lucky Charms, but to have AC! And since I was 19 I have been blessed to have AC, until last week.

Things change when you have a child with breathing problems as well as needing an inhaler yourself, all of a sudden!

I lasted about 1 day of just sitting still and having sweat run down every part of my body! I then took my mom upon her offer to put us up in a local hotel. Some would say it was a vacation, I say it was a test of my will, patience, endurance and ability not to scream on the top of my lungs! Why? Two boys, who all of a sudden, couldn't stand the sight of each other!

Life still had to go on, but I couldn't do anything in my normal routine.

Sometimes God does this to shake things up a bit. He wants us to remember how good we have it now that we live in Him and not in the world.
I learned to enjoy my sons; I am not saying that I didn't lose it a few times, but I did learn. I played games, annoyed them, laughed, swam in the hotel pool and had to learn to make the best food choices without being able to cook.

Thankfully, God was working through this mess and through my mom (love you!) to enable me the sight to see that a clean floor just should not come before playing a game of Mouse Trap with my kids!

Saving Savvy by Kelly Hancock

As a frugal homemaker I was eager to read Saving Savvy by Kelly Hancock and share my thoughts. Even a seasoned saver like me was reminded of tricks and encouraged by Kelly’s honest words that were Biblically based.

Kelly has some very practical ideas and suggestions in Saving Savvy. One of her tips was to surround yourself with like-minded people. I have been doing this and advising this to everyone I speak to about saving/coupoing. When you have the encouragement of those wanting to save like you, your probability of failure is sliced down to nothing.

I was so glad to see that “Getting Your Family on Board” was addressed. This usually is the BIGGEST obstacle most homemakers looking to save have to hurdle. It’s the world- view concept that “If my wife/mom has to clip coupons we’ll look poor and have nothing to eat in the house”. I love that Kelly gives you solid advice and steps to take to make this a reality.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the Bible verses sprinkled throughout. They remind us, give encouragement and help us to live more like Christ!

Saving Savvy is written in a simple, orderly fashion where anyone, from the novice saver to the expert frugal gal can pick up a copy, dive right in and begin to rehab her pantry, freezer and savings opportunities. We've visited our local, Christian radio station......

......picked huge, delicious blueberries...

.....visited the pool a few times...

.....had fun at our church's VBS...

.....and made friends with some unusual creatures God created...

God is so good in making provisions so that the boys can enjoy this time of year! Our friends are a plenty and our advetures fun. May you find your blessings everyday this summer & always!

Picking & Choosing

After a few days of getting my thoughts together I found it pertinent that I write about this subject here.

I was speaking with who I thought was a Christian sister, but apparently I was wrong. She was what I am calling a picker/chooser. Another sister brought up a particular store and I chimed in about how that business turned away two applicants. One based on sexual preference and one because of size and race. If you are reading this and know me personally, you know I am a fighter and stand up for what I believe in. I said that it was a shame this manager who was hiring was not a Christian because they would have been hired based on their experience and merit to do a good job.

Well, I did not get the loving, kind response that I thought I would get. Instead, I saw anger, hatred and someone who acted as if they did not know Jesus at all! She stated that "If they didn't flaunt who they were so much that maybe they wouldn't get beaten, ignored or put down." Yes, those were the words of a "Christian" woman. When I asked about the other one who was not hired due to size and race she said they should lose weight!

Now, the two people I speak of were qualified for these positions and had the experience needed to perform the various tasks given. They happened to be friends and went in for 2 open positions.

Since when did Jesus pick & chooose who He would save? Since when did God the Father pick & choose who would know about the Son? If this were the case, none of us would be worthy of either. Jesus himself sat down with adulterers, murderers, theives and tax collectors. Just because it does not mention other people the point is that Jesus came for ALL of us, not just a particular class, race or weight. We are called to Love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matthew 5:44a by Jesus Christ Himself! We know that no sin is greater than another so why do we put those who do not know the salvation of the Lord in a box and dismiss them because WE judge their sin greater than our own??

I have no right to judge anyone's sin. I have no right to pick & choose who I show love & mercy to. I have no right to every breath I am given by God. And the same goes for each and every one of my Christian brothers & sisters. We are set apart from the world because God invited us into His family and we choose to follow the way of the Lord versus the way of the world.

We continue to sin on a daily basis, every, single, one of us sinned today and will again tomorrow!

My Christian brothers and sisters, I plead with you, do not be overcome by this world for the sake of this world, yet be overcome by the love Jesus showed us through His life, death & resurrection. We are called to show love to the loveless, our enemies & those who would curse us. No where in the life of Jesus did He call us to judge others upon their sins. So the next time you are faced with the opportunity to pick & choose who you should witness to, pray for or be loving to, ask yourself one question:

What would Jesus do?

Home Farming

We are trying our hand at Home Farming this season. T and I worked very hard growing some seedlings and planting others. We have started with tomatoes, Romaine lettuce, arugula, banana peppers, strawberries, dill, rosemary & basil.

Soon, we hope to add beans, more herbs and cucumbers.

We are starting small to see how we do. Our one concern was for our resident bunnies, but they have yet to try and sneak a taste!

Yet again I was treated to a wonderful weekend with my OCI (Ocean City Insiders) buddies. We met at City Hall where some new OCI's joined us. Throughout the weekend I was treated with a stay at the Princess Royal, breakfast at the 33rd street Quality Inn, laser tag at Planet Maze, happy hour at Phillips Beach Plaza and dinner at the Blue Ox.

Gospel of John

We began looking at the birth of Christ in John. Our focus was on the angels appearing first to the lowly shepherds. Why is this so important? Well, in Biblical times shepherds were treated horribly. Now, although many of them were unkept and some were even thieves, that does not mean they were any less important in the body of our family, God's family. So why would God announce the birth of His only Son to the lowliest of the low?

Simple, He wanted to stress that Jesus came for all mankind, NOT just the rich. So, do you treat others differently because of their station in life? Whether you treat someone with more possessions better or don't think twice about a homeless person yo walk by, you are still not doing as He commanded. We are to love all!

Jesus was born for each and everyone of us. Have you invited Him into your heart?

I know many people who tirelessly give of themselves day in and day out for the sake of others, but one in particular stands out...my friend Michelle.

A few years ago I met Michelle at a home school group outing and we hit it right off. She is a beautiful person who is always ready with a smile and a hug, as are her 4 children. Her heart is that of a servant to her friends, family and neighbors.

No matter what she is going through Michelle is smiling with her arms outstretched and a willing ear to listen. She has never turned down a request to help with children's ministry, serving her community or working towards the greater good.

I don't have the time or space to list her many accomplishments, so I will say this; Michelle has served from ages 0 - 100 through personal one-on-one time, meals, projects, transportation and more. I truly do not think she knows the word "no" or even cares to know it!

As Michelle is bound to help, so are her children. She has passed down her servant's heart to all 4 of them who will be serving the next generation with smiles and hugs along their way.

Before you know it, there she is, out of the blue your very own sister. Who, for some reason knew she had to call you. Whether it was for a prayer request, to ask a favor or just to chat, she knew she had to talk to you. What a blessing!

Not Just a Tree

After our trip to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA I was reviewing my photos and had to tell this story of God getting my attention.

This tree was the first flora I can across as we exited the Welcome Center to trek to the conservatory which was considerably a long walk in the blustery wind. Snow would have just been the icing on the cake, but alas none was to be found this day.

So, with camera(s) in hand I accompanied my friend Michelle and her 2 youngest children. We were going to make a pit stop at the birdhouse, but it was closed.

I got my Canon ready to shoot then I looked around and EVERYTHING was dead, lifeless, colorless. I felt a tugging on my heart......saying "Look up". So I did and saw this beautifully, towering tree. It's branches/arms reaching up to the heavens, convicting my soul to praise the Lord for this day, this wonderfully beautiful day. Not only was my youngest son with friends & learning about God's world, but I was spending time with like-minded families.

What God did next was too exceptional. We made it to the Conservatory. It was big, enclosed and warm! Another gift from the Father, and He wasn't done!

As we proceeded He gave me the most beautiful gift, flowers. Not just ANY flowers, but my favorites! On the path stood Stargazer Lillies and around the bend Daisies! These are my favorite flora, bar none!

As I laid eyes on the site God gave me I was in awe of His beauty and craftsmanship. They were perfect specimens! All I had to do was look up, through bare branches of a tree to see the beauty in an otherwise bleak day.

Lesson: You never know what God has for you. Just because it's cold and dark He will be your light, warmth and shelter. You can always expect God to come through. Maybe not the way you think, but He always does! Why? Because He loves you!

As we study through Babylon, The Exodus and Assyria we come across many interesting projects!

The Assyrians were a force to be reckoned with! They even defeated the Babylonians!

My Favorite Present

This year was a lean year, but my family was blessed to have our health, a roof over our head, food on the table, transportation, hubby's job and more then we deserve!

On Christmas morning the kids ripped into the few presents we could afford and were content in their blessings! Did I mention that I love my boys?!

A few weeks back, my oldest son brought home his first, handmade frame from his Foundational Technology class. Well, EVERYBODY wanted it! Grandma, dad, his girlfriend, her mom, his brother......

Guess what I got for Christmas? Yep! The coveted frame!!!! It means so much to me, that even though we have our moments he thought enough of him mom to decide to give me a piece of him! He even wrapped it!!

Thought I would try my hand at this. Here's a review of 2010 in the Handlir household.....

C - Christian, this year my faith was tested beyond what I believed I could handle! God in His infinite wisdom and love saw me through the tough times, lifted me up and loved me beyond what I deserve!

H - Homeschool, we are so very blessed to have T home, learning and growing.

R - Ring, V received his Class of 2013 class ring.

I - Imagination, T's imagination has soared this year in various experiments and crafts! In fact, he wants to be an inventor/scientist when he grows up.

S - Security, Shannon's job has been there through the harsh economic times! Praise God that He gave me this strong, faithful man to provide for our family.

T - Ten years, Shannon and I celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary! Who knew God would have blessed us with this love, His love through each of us. We spent it in our favorite place, Ocean City! Our love was tested this year, but God created a new heart and vision in each of us.

M - Missing, this year is harder then last. When g'mom left this earth to be in the presence of the Lord she took a part of all our hearts.

A - Always, always remember to put His Word in your heart every day!

S - Stay-Home-Mom, what a wonderful blessing! God has given me a wonderful gift in being a SAHM. My time is not dependent upon a time clock, but on what the Lord would have me do each and every day. I serve Him through serving as wife, mom & homeschool teacher!

As you reminisce about 2010 may you find the joy & blessings!

Full Moon

As we were preparing for the lunar eclipse we were amazed at the ring full moon. T and I had a wonderful discussion about how God allows us to have guidance through the moon and stars.

What an awesome God we serve! He provides all we need.

It's amazing what T comes up with! Even when he has a break from school he is still inquiring, exploring, creatingand learning. He has such a thirst to learn about everything!

He discovered that hot and cold "create" weather. So, without any help, he froze an empty soda bottle (he loves to reuse!), place a balloon on it then placed it in a bowl of boiling water. What happened?? The balloon was filled in a matter of seconds.

Then, as we were learning about the monuments that the Egyptians and Romans bulit to their gods. So, following the suggested craft in SOTW (The Story of the World) T created a monument. In honor of??? GOD! He said that all our monuments should honor him. He is so insightful for such a young soul!

Annual Trip to York Road

We took our annual trek to York Road. Our first stop was Valley View Farm.

This tree was my favorite this year...it's a Crabs for Christmas-like tree!

Next was off to Watson's to see what animals were visiting. This year.......alpaca's! They were the cutest things! Very quiet, soft and still creatures.

Class Ring

I cannot believe my baby just got his class ring! It seems as only yesterday he was using a teething ring!

We are so very proud of you!!

His choice was a yellow and white gold ring, with a sapphire. On his year side sits the peace sign and on his name side sits football/baseball insignia.

Well, with this photo it is official. Prince William is set to marry the beautiful Kate Middleton. This photograph was taken by Mario Testino who also shot William's beautiful & late mother, Princess Di.

It was kind of eerie to see Kate don Princess Di's engagement ring, but I am sure Di would have it no other way for this down-to-earth girl who captured William's heart.

I look forward to watching the event of their marriage, just as I did so many years ago when Diana married Charles. Us girls need our fairy tales, princes & princesses!

Open House

I was invited by a friend from high school to partake in a fundraising Open House for B.A.R.C.S. I love animals and said yes! It was an intimate setting in Denise's home and went well for my first Open House. I was able to make a donation of 40% of my earnings to B.A.R.C.S. !

Start of the Holidays

Well, the torch has been passed to my mom and me to keep the tradition of making Polish sauage alive! This year we stuffed over 50 sausages. Some are to enjoy at home and others are to bless our family & friends.

I love the smell of my home after we make sausage!!

The boys and I created something different this year... a THANKS-for GOD-GIVING tree. We included some of the things we are thankful for to remind us how blessed we are. Some included...my bed, our home, God.

Crafty Week

We started our week learning about Ancient China, through Story of the World. Our craft choice lead us to making homemade clay. So naturally we did a version on Ming Vases/Bowls. Although this photograph does not do T's work justice they turned out great!

We found a great library book filled with Christmas Crafts! This was one trial. All I can say is that it involves snowmen and candy! It's a hush, hush project as T is giving these to a few friends.

Halloween

We had a long, but fun weekend celebrating Halloween. This year Travis was Mario & Vince was Ringo (Sgt. Pepper's version) then we had Becca, Vince's girlfriend along for the ride as a witch.

The trek started Saturday with Trunk R Treating, then Trick R Treating in the neighborhood on Sunday. The boys took turns in the neighborhood and giving out treats.

I finally got to carving the pumpkins just in time for our visitors.

The little things

T was helping me do his laundry. Ok, truth, I have been training him as he will be taking over the chore after his next birthday. As always there as a loud clanking in the dryer while his pants were in there. It was one, single penny. The response was "WOW! look mom a penny!" He was not being sarcastic, but genuine as always.

How I would love to be more like him as we are instructed by the Lord.

He is fascinated by spiders, although he won't touch them; he is thrilled to find the smallest amount of change so he can run and put it in his bank; he draws pictures of God and rainbows just because.

I wish I had the patience to walk with my son more closely and see the world through his eyes. Maybe tomorrow?

Rubbermaid reveal

Just got a new product that I had to share with you, the Rubbermaid reveal. This product is a microfiber spray mop that let's you use ANY cleaner you prefer to clean your floors with! Although bleach products are not suggested.

The regular price of this was $19.99 at my local grocery store, but they were on sale this week for $9.99 AND I happened by a $5.00 off coupon. So my total was $4.99! You can buy replacement mop heads for about $2.99-3.99.

This mop comes with the removable microfiber head that is huge! The cleaner bottle even marks where water and solution go. The mop head itself moves very well around corners and furniture.

You control the spray amount with a quick squeeze, but I had one problem and only one problem; the spray area is a bit high. You need to be careful that you spray opposite any carpet!

This mop cleaned my floors well, in fact better then the Siffer wet pads I usually use. And even on the small area that I mop I usually have to use 2-3 different Swiffers.

So, all-in-all this is a fabulous idea! I will definitely be giving up my Swiffer. Bye-bye Swiffer!

Bad Hair Day

It never bothers me what I look like at the beach (no comments!). I always feel comfortable and calm whether it's 100 degrees or snowing-yes, I have been in OC while it snowed and I was on the beach! You need to look at life differently. Instead of worrying if it's too cold or will rain, think about the peace you'll have because everyone else is thinking the old way!
Sometimes it's simply a matter of perspective.

Ocean City Insiders Part I

I was so blessed to yet again be able to share about one of my favorite places on the east coast...Ocean City, MD as an Ocean City Insider. We had our "end-of-the-season" gathering this past weekend and I shared it with my boys and mom.

My top pick of the weekend.........Steak Sandwhich at Dumser's Restaurant! I was on the fence about this one, but VERY glad I chose it! The roll was fresh & soft. The steak was NOT a steak-umm it was real steak, cooked well & smothered with cheese and onions!

This was a hearty sandwhich that I would choose again and again! I am so happy that there is yet another reason to visit Dumser's!

Was half-way through when it dawned on me to take a photo!

Ocean City Insiders Part II

As part of the weekend, Comfort Inn @ Gold Coast Mall provided us with a nicely appointed, Bay View room. It had all thenecessities for a short stay: pool, mini-fridge, microwave, flat-screen tv, nice-sized bathroom and 2 comfy beds.

Since my last visit, the CIGCM has renovated a bit. Including their foyer and many rooms on the uppper levels.

The service was warm and friendly from the front desk to the sales office!

While coming in late Sunday night from a run for milkshakes, I dropped a chocolate one right on the floor in front of the elevator and the front desk personnel (forgot her name) jumped up and nicely said "I'll get it." I apologized & asked to help, but she said "No thank you, it's all part of my job."

There was NO attitude, simply service done right! I will definitely continue to stay here!

Ocean City Insiders Part III

We were welcomed into City Hall and were thrilled to be visited by Mayor Rick Meehan! It was an honor to meet him and here his story. Unfortunately, a wedding called him away, but itwas so nice that he took the time to come, say hello and thank us for all our hard work!

The biggestblessing of this weekend, by far, was being able to FINALLY get my mom to OC! She had not been in several years and she was certainly due!

She did not let her rheumatoid arthritis stop her either. Although slowly, she made it to walk on the beach, feel the sand, see & hear the seagulls and smell the salty air!

We even got her out on the boardwalk!

Ocean City Insiders Part IV

Although the clouds rolled in on Sunday morning, we still had 2 more days left in OC!

Again, the Clarion Hotel invited the OC Insiders back for their Breakfast Buffet at the Horizons Restaurant - Ocean Front!

If you want good service and great breakfast food DO visit the Clarion! No matter where you sit you can see the ocean and no matter what your preference for breakfast is, they have it!

Besides a variety there is a serviced omlete and waffle bar attended to by an awesome cook!

A goood meal was had by all!

Visit to D.C.

Although we began our visit at the White House we were not allowed cameras so this phot of me and the boys will have to do. We are stiing on the fountain outside the Ronald Reagan Building, where we parked.

We arrived in D.C. about 6:15am. Our tour wasn't until 7:30am so our caravan took a walk toward the Washington Monument. On our way, not 1 block from the steps of the White House was a man, shoeless, dirty and sleeping on a heating grate. I began to pray and was appauled that not only in the richest country in the world, but steps from where the leader of the free world lives!

We travelled over to The Nation's Mall. Our first stop was the Smithsonian's American History Museum. The kids were all so excited! From the trains, to trucks, to Kermit, to the war items were so interesting to all the kids!

Toward the end of the exhibit, The Price of Freedom/Americans at War we came across this piece. They were parts of the Twin Towers. It was very emotional, intense & sad. There was a feeling of dread around this metal.

The kids were mostly all too young to remember 9/11. So we needed to spend some time here and explain 9/11 to them. I was thankful to be able to share this as there were a few others around listening in on our lesson.

Vincent waited patiently as we took pictures of the younger kids. So, naturally I snapped a few photos ofhim and his great smile!

A fun, educational, memorable & exhasting day was had by all!

Autumn is here. Well, at least "officially", by the calendar, it's what we are told.
This season means something different and it varies by where in theworld you live.
For instance, in Korea they celebrate the harvest with Chusok where failies gather to thank their ancestors for the fruits of whichthey were blessed with.
Native American's said that the moon showed it's brightest during this time they called Harvest Moon. Israel celbrates the Succoth that lasts seven days while Jewish families build booths outside.
And here in the good ol' U.S.A. we look forward to leaves changing color after the Equinox, cooler temperatures, Thanksgiving and here by the bay oysters!

No matter how you celebrate the harvest/autumn/fall remember you are not alone. People all over the world celebrate..in different ways, or at different times of year, but we all celebrate.

So, how do YOU celebrate? We celebrate with trips to PA for photo opps and start field-trip-mania!

We started our day down at the Maryland Science Center. We mulled over the dinosaurs, played in Newton's Alley, parused the gift shop, discovered more about the Maryland Blue Crab and just got to enjoy a relaxing day.

Luckily, I got this up-close while the boys still had energy to smile. We were up on the 2nd floor over-looking the Harbor Place views.

A favorite spot of mine when I was a teenager was Federal Hill. I surprised the boys with a picnic lunch over looking the Baltimore Harbor.

They had a nice rest and enjoyed one of the best views in the city............

Two of my favorite flowers, after daisies, are pink & yellow roses. My grandma had them growing in her garden.

They began to die when she went home to the Lord. I felt lead to prune them back and wait & see.

A few days later they began to bloom and still have.

My mom brought me these on my birthday, today & told me that they were a gift...from my grandma.

We've Only Just Begun

It's hard to believe that the unoffcial end of summer is near.

Facing this school year has been a it difficult for me. Vince has entered 10th grade and once the kids get into high school time truly begins to fly! Now I realize that soon my son will be in driving school, picking out a school ring and attending proms! UGH! Travis is completing 4th grade work and has already decided on a career in Science. He has created his own style now.

And on top of these drastic changes I am facing the BIG 4-0!

When did life go by? I was just picking out penny loafers in 1984 for my freshman year in high school!

For everything, there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1

Vince got this shirt in OC and HAD to wear it on his first day back. Worked pretty well for him..he got a lot of hugs from random girls! That's my boy!

Summer Winding Down

How do I know summer is over? Well, we've been to OC several times, all our art projects are completed and the Ravens start pre-season!

Watching the game against the Panthers last night made me think. Most of the guys on the field will either be gone in September or only seen on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

But what makes them stand out during pre-season? They are excited! They play their hearts out as if this was the Super Bowl. They are thrilled to be a part of the game no matter if this is their last play or the first of many.

Shouldn't we ALL play this way in life? As if it were our Super Bowl, our meeting with our Maker? If those of us who called ourselves Christian, followers of Jesus Christ acted like this each day, many would turn from their wicked ways and have faith.

So the next time you think you are safe just because you believe, reach deep down and pull out more of the Lord and watch what He does in your life and the life of others!

So spread your wings, open yor heart and let Him in!

First, let me say that it doesn't look like much...a small building, with a small porch, tucked away with little parking. As soon as we pulled up we could smell the fragrant aroma of meats.

We were greeted promptly and welcomed once announcing this was our first visit. After making our lunch selections we chose a table inside as you have a choice between inside dining and dining on the covered, front deck. In minutes our meals were brought to our table.

The photograph above was my choice of Carolina Pulled Pork BBQ with cole slaw & sweet potato fries. All I can say is WOW! There was enough meat to make a second sandwhich!

Harbor Que offers starters, sandwhiches in a variety of Pulled Pork BBQ, Hickory Smoked Pit Ham or Turkey and Smoked Polish Sausage, ribs, chicken, wings and desserts. Their menu is inexpensive as well.

Port Discovery....for FREE!

I must have been out of my mind today! What was I thinking? Well, I was thinking of a fun day to be had in Baltimore at the Port Discovery Children's Museum....for FREE!

Yes, today was their FREE admission day. This photo does not do justice to the several hundred, if not thousand people behind us alone! Everyone in Maryland with a kid seemed to be there!

Travis was excited because his two fellow homeschool friends were coming, as was I to have the fellowship of their mom!

So, although we waited in line for over 30 minutes, it was a blessing to have friends with us to talk, share and pass the time!

There were some wonderful exhibits, like this make a poem wall where Travis found his favorite poet, Shel Silverstein!

Travis loves Runny Bunny and the way Shel's words makes him laugh!

I was happy to see this exhibit in Water Works! See, my child DOES know how to do windows. (Putting that in my back pocket for now)

All in all it was a blessed day, where several of us homeschool families connected, learned, ate and enjoyed time spent with our kids.

Tye Dye Fun

Today, due to the weather, we stayed inside. We started the day with homemade waffles, began working on dinner, loaves of pumpkin pecan bread and then tye dyed shirts.

We did the easy tye dyes. What you need: washed, white t-shirts, Sharpie markers, spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol, rubber bands, hangers and a cover for your work area.

This year's family, vacation was spent in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee where over 10 years ago Shannon & I were married.

We found peace in the mountains, serenity by the streams and beauty everywhere. The locals were friendly and very accommodating.

Here is one of our favorite places, Cade's Cove. It is an 11-mile driving/biking/walking loop that is an awesome area filled with flora and fauna. It is also home to original log cabin homes and places of worship.

As we were walking back from one of the cabins a doe darted out from the field and walked across our path as if she had known us forever. It was quite a moment.

We also spent time in Gatlinburg which is more touristy. Travis was treated to a sight from his all-time favorite movie, Back to the Future.

On Father's Day I wanted to take a moment and thank my wonderful husband! No, this is not be sucking up, I honestly have a husband who is a wonderful provider.

Shannon very seldom complains. He only does so because he wants better for his family. Not only does he work at least 12 hours per day (sometimes 6 days a week), he enables me to be what I have always wanted to be...an at-home mom, homeschooler and college student. He works so that on birthdays, Christmas and special days the boys have what they want/need.

He may not remember certain things, like Mother's Day, or when I told him 3 times I am getting knee injections, but when he does he does it well.

There is a sweetness about his soul that attracted me to him. I knew there was something about him that God wanted me to know. He is a fan of both our boys and wants only success for their lives. Shannon supports me in all I do, crazy ideas and all!

I look forward to the day when we are sitting on our porch, rocking, waiting for our children and grandchildren to visit...enjoying the best God has planned for us!

I pray that those reading have a spouse, father, grandfather, uncle like my husband. If you do then remember them on this day for father's that usually goes unnoticed. If your spouse or father is not with us, remember the good times and be blessed with them.

Connoisseurs Jewelry Cleaner & Pandora

Recently I purchase Connoisseurs' Jewelry cleaner for silver jewelry to clean my Pandora. After only a few seconds my silver was opaque!!! I immediately tried to email Pandora as well as Connoisseurs.

I was just looking for a suggestion as to how to fix the problem.

One major problem was that my two-tone (silver with 14kt gold) piece was ruined! The gold was gone!?

Within less then 24 hours a respresentative from Connoisseurs emailed back offering to buff out my jewelry if I would send it to them. Knowing a buff might do the job was a relief! I was so thrilled that I received an answer.....Pandora? still waiting!

Took the boys downyoshun for an extended weekend and the OC Air Show. It was amazing!

We spent time with other homeschool families and had a great view of the planes around 24th street and the beach!

We had fun in the sun, I took gobs of photos & even got the boys' scopes done. T was bitten around his right eye by one of the huge, black flies that visit OC and there was a few hours we were out of commission until the swelling went down :O) After some benadryl & steroids (called in by his doctor) he was back to his old, handsome self!

We even got to Assateague at the right time to see some ponies!

We were all sad to leave, but will be back soon!

We visited Ft. McHenry in Baltimore and had an amazing time. I have been visiting the fort since I was a kid and every time I go back I learn something new or see something from a different perspective.

We were treated by a talk from one of the park rangers and were able to unfurl one of the American flags that has flown over the fort!

Brad's Produce ia local farm that we love! We visit weekly almost all year around.

Our favorite time is starwberry season! That's when T & I can go and pick strawberries until we drop. We usually do several visits so I have enough for pies, jams, cakes & freezing for the off-season times when we make smoothies, YUM!

We had the perfect berry picking weather...overcast skies and a slight breeze.

T wanted to eat them more then pick, but nonetheless he was a good helper. He was happy to help and loves picking foods he will be able to eat.

The strawberries wer beautiful! Not too large, just sweet enough and the looked awesome next to their flowers!

Insect Lore's Butterfly Garden arrived this past week and T was thrilled to get started learning about his new friends.

We set up the Butterfly Garden and waited for the caterpillars to work their way to the top of the incubator.

FINALLY all 5 made their way to form the chrysalides and we transfered them over to the Butterfly Garden.

I was very surprised that 5 of them survived. We were only guaranteed 3. This was a simple kit with great moments for learning.

Low and behold 5 days later, we had our first newborn. T named him Shutters because he shuttered when we got near the garden. He was a shy Painted Lady and crawled directly to the top as if to say "I'm ready!"

Next to immerge was Rick. Not sure how he got that name, but T was quite pleased with his choice of names.

While we waited for the next 3 to emerge we read Butterflies and Moths by Nic Bishop. This is a great book for 1st - 4th grades with a science project like this. There are beautiful pictures with clear explanations.

FUN FACTS WE LEARNED:

*Little green balls on the chrysalides are the butterfly's waste or frass.

*Chrysalides shake as a way to ward off predators.

*When bitterflies emerge you may see a red, blood-like substance. This is not blood. It is called meconium which is leftover coloring & tissues from the wing formation. (see photo)

*Butterflies normally only live 2-4 weeks. Such a shame for such a beautiful creature.

10th Wedding Anniversary

11 years ago Shannon waited in the mall to meet Marianne, and their lives would change forever! A year after meeting, to the day they were married.

We decided to go away to Tennessee and get married. We found a beautiful, Christian chapel snuggled in the Smoky Mountains to commit ourselves to each other on May 8, 2000 at 4:00 pm.

10 years later, after ups and downs, we are more in love with each other now then the day we met. We still make each other laugh and learned to hold each other up in the low times.

This year we decided to play it quiet again and celebrate alone at our place, Ocean City. We laughed, cuddles and reminisced. What a beautiful life we have built together!

Love is patient and kind. Love is not boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable and it keeps no record of being wrong. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance. I Corinthians 13:4-7

I understand America being a melting pot. I understand that we are the land of the free and the home of the brave, but American CITIZENS are now under attack and I don't like it one bit!

These students were wearing their pride as American citizens on a NON-recognized holiday in the U.S.A. Cinco de Mayo is right down there with St. Patrick's Day! If you'll notice NONE of the mexican students had ANY mexican-flavor clothing on to support their heritage!

The one girl notes that she would never "do this on the 4th of July". Actually, I wouldn't be that offended by that as the 4th of July stands for the idependence of America and all her peoples, from wherever they come from!

Watch for yourself, come to your own conclusions, be aware that as an American citizen your rights are-from this day forward up for debate!

Taking Chance review

Since this movie is about the humanity of our American Soldiers, it didn't make the big screen. Surprise, surprise, surprise!!

Talking Chance is the historical journey of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl (Kevin Bacon), who escorted the remains of PFC Chance Phelps, 19 year old Marine. On his journey from Delaware to Wyoming in 2004 Lt. Col. Strobl encounters many acts of respect from fellow Americans.

I highly recommend viewing this movie! It is ok for the older kids, only a brief language moment, no nudity or violence...only a beautiful lesson of patriotism, respect and love...NO MATTER WHAT you believe about our involvement in the war, this will move you!!!

We stayed at the Carousel Hotel. Here we ice skated, then went for a swim in the warm indoor pool!

We had a great time as a family! We mini-golfed, walked the boards, visited Ripley's and bought gifts.

The sun was shining, the ocean was still chilly, but the boardwalk was open for all!

We at the The Shark on the Harbor in WOC.....our favorite place to eat in OC!

Of course, we spent time on the beach...soaking up rays and digging in the sand.

PEEPS Unit Study

This time of year is filled with so many joys, newness and fun! And I love every minute of it!

T & I share a love for PEEPS. It's the ONLY time of year we will eat them. So when I found a short unit study on PEEPS I was thrilled! We used PEEPS to calculate, measure, draw and explore.

PEEPS are also a great motivator! For every line of completed math problems T got to choose 2 PEEPS.

Corey Haim dies at 38

Yesterday, due to illness Corey Haim left this earth. I remember him fonding from one of my favorite, popular movies The Lost Boys and the less main stream Lucas.

I loved him in Lucas because he was yet the heartthrob us girls of the '80s came to love. He played a young, geek who was into bugs! He was honest and adorable. Then came The Lost Boys....all I can say is vampires and the "Coreys", Edward had nothing on this cuties!

His counterpart, Corey Feldman, stuck by his friend to the point of doing a reality show with him, The Two Coreys, but CH's drug abuse not only strained their relationship, but the show's popularity. CF grew up, got married, was responsible and tried to help his friend, with no luck.

It was said that CH was with his mom, suffering from flulike symptoms. My prayers and thoughts go out to his mother and family. He was too young to die so tragically.

I will always remember him as the almost old-enough cutie! R.I.P. Corey.

Quiche

Ever since Shannon and I tried low-carb eating I have been hooked on this simple dish, quiche! With my basic recipe I can create any variety of flavor. From a mushroom/three cheese to applewood sausage with cheese to cheese/chard & more!

What's the secret? Cream, that simple. Here's my basic recipe:

Mare's Quiche (makes 1)

Pie tin
salt
pepper
2 TBsp butter
9 large eggs
1/4 cup heavy cream

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Butter the pie tin. Mix eggs and cream together for 30 seconds. Add salt & pepper to taste.
Place extra ingredients (sausage, cheese, veggies) into pie tin. Pour eggs over extras. Place in oven for about 15 minutes. Keep a watch! When eggs brown on the sides it's ready!
These freeze nicely for a quick meal! To reheat, place into a 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes or microwave 1 minute at a time up to 6 minutes.

Williamsburg Visit

We were so excited to be blessed to travel to Williamsburg, VA for their Homeschool Week Experience.

As we began our travel it was actually snowing in Maryland! Luckily the weather cooperated and the sun was shining through some very beautiful clouds.

Traffic was light as we headed down on Sunday and we made great time!

Upon arrival we checked out the "check-in" area at the Visitor's Center.

They made the Homeschool community feel welcome with signs and banners.

After settling in we took a drive to see what there was to do in Williamsburg. What did mommy find?..........

YANKEE CANDLE!

It was awesome! The boys both played around at the Wax Works. They each made a wax cast of their hands. Both did the peace sign.

T dipped some candles and I created some tapers and my own jar candle.

The boys were just not cooperative, so I needed to punnish them until they learned their lesson!

Not only is Williamsburg a great learning opportunity, but there are many places, like this, to just have some fun.....while learning!

Although the wind was steady in the morning, it subsided to reveal a beautiful, sunny 54 degree day!

Adjacent the the Public Hospital (off of Francis Street), America's 1st looney bin, is the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum & Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.

One of the first programs, What's A Fraktur? was very interesting. We learned about how German immigrants brought this important art form to the United States & it is still practiced today.

After about 2 miles of walking, the boys wanted a snack. We visited a little bakery tucked away behind the Raleigh Tavern on the Duke of Glouchester Street.

The boys were treated to a rootbeer whose recipe dated back to colonial times, a chocolate stick also from colonial times, peanut butter cookies and cider.

We spent the entire day in Colonial Williamsburg.

We got to meet a member of the House of Burgess, a house maid, the postmasters wife, a print maker and others.

Our experience was fabulous! Not all sites were open, but there was enough to see and do. I highly recommend visiting during the Homeschool Experience weeks. The next one will be held in the Fall.

FINALLY a celebration!

Vince did not ask for much this year as a birthday present. He just wanted a bluetooth for his PS3 and dinner with his family and his girl, Zoe.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate so we had to keep putting the dinner off until today!

He had no idea where we were going. Actually, I had convinced him that I was taking him for a haircut! Right before Zoe's house I texted him..."SURPRISE!"

Vince loves Red Lobster, so that is where we dined.

The End is Near

On my way to do a photo shoot I was blessed to see this. Yesterday was a pretty confusing day. I was ready for it to come to an end! You would think this would have made my day, but then I came to the realization that another day follows :O)
Enjoy what you are given today, good, bad or indifferent because tomorrow might not come!

Project Linus

Our family was looking for a worthwhile volunteer opportunity for the winter months. I was leaning more towards a charity for the homeless, but Project Linus sort of dropped in my lap.

Having generally healthy boys we have been blessed not to need long-term hospitalization or care.

Project Linus has provided over 3,000,000 blankets to sick or traumatized children, thanks to their volunteer "blanketeers".

If you are looking for a wonderful way to tell a child that they are thought of, why not look into becoming a "blanketeer"? Whether you can quilt, knit/crochet or work better with fleece you will be telling a child they are loved!

Visit their site at PROJECT LINUS for information about the organization, it's local chapters and instructions for simple blankets.

You'll be glad you did!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Well, a number of you have been on the edge of your seats waiting to hear this and now it's official! We are back to homeschooling!

Thank you to my Christian sisters who advised me to submit and wait to hear God's answer! He did!!!! T is so happy. He will be sad for the friendships he made, but is excited at what the future holds!

We are planning our 1st monumental field trip to Williamsburg and are so thrilled that we are blessed by the Father in all His goodness!!

Thanks to my special friends, Deb, Desiree, Jen, Kelley & my mom. Thank you all for your prayers, encouragement & advice! Love you all!

I am SO looking forward to more of this kinda' time:

Blizzard 2010

No one quite expected our area to get the amount of snow that we ended up with, but by the looks of these clouds the day before I knew something big was coming!

Before the snow began, even in the midst of a busy day, it was eerily quiet throughout the area. The wind began to whip and the birds were hiding.

The, several hours into it we couldn't even open our front door! At this point we had about 22 inches and counting! No one was looking forward to shoveling out, but we did...

After the work, it was time to play. We made goodies and crafts.

After the snow stopped, the air cooled and sleep was in the air, we awoke to a bright, beautiful morning!

Good-Bye, but not Forgiven

Although it has been almost 16 years I was told that I need to let something go. Now, if this was your team you may feel differently. So don't judge! Just imagine what it would be like if it happened to you! 1970 was a great year! The Baltimore Colts won SuperBowl V and I was born! LOL! We were on top of the world!
Unfortunately, a few years down the road a man named Irsay would take control of the Baltimore Colts and things would NEVER be the same! This was also the same year that Johnny U was traded to the San Diego Chargers :O( Before Johnny U left, during the last game, he came off the bench to replace Marty Domres leading the Colts hitting Eddie Hinton in a 55 yard touchdown pass! This ensure the Colts' win over the Buffalo Bills 35-7!! Johnnu U got a standing ovation COMPLETE with a single-engine plane carrying a banner "Unitas We Stand".
So, we lose Johnny U, there are some disputes, a bad season, John Elway REFUSES to play in Baltimore??, then MAYFLOWER hits!
Irsay goes a huntin'! He looks here there and everywhere for someplace to take our Colts while the Maryland legislature tries to use eminent domain laws to keep the Colts here! We all know, that didn't work :O( The NFL wasn't much help either! Under the cover of a new fallen snow and midnight, Irsay packed up the offices in Mayflower trucks and moved the Colt franchise to Indianpolis on March 28, 1984.
It tooke several years to obtain a CFL team, then we kicked them out as soon as we got an NFL team 12 years after the Colts skippped town!
Then, after promising to relinquish the name of the Colts the Irsay family reniged on their promise...there's a shock!!! MANY Baltimore Colts legends including Johnny U were angered by what went on and refused to acknowledge the franchise for the rest of their lives!
So, that's where I stand. I want an apology. Robert Irsay died in 1997, but his family survives him. They owe Baltimore an apology. Will it right the wrongs? No. Is it a start? Yes. DO we want the name/logo/colors/etc. back? No, not NOW!
The NFL should have stepped in and stripped them of the name/colors/logo, at least! Even their cheerleaders are wearing costumes that resemble those of the Baltimore Colts.

I've said my peace, My team is the Baltimore Ravens. Now & forever more!

Day Out

With 3 days off of school finding something to do with the boys was hard. We started the week off at The Avenue. A local radio station was collecting gently used blankets and coats for the homeless.

So, the day before we went shopping for new blankets and coats. I just can't imagine my boys being homeless and having to coat or blanket during the cold months :O(

So we spent the rest of the afternoon talking about what we were thankful for having in our lives!

The next day we were off to see Alvin & the Chipmunks, The Squeakuel & Pizza @ Frank's!

Finally we had a day of rest! Ahhh! It's good to have a day where your kids are home, quiet, safe and all is well!

Ravens beat the Brady Bunch!

Here’s a story from a lovely lady
Who was routin’ for her Ravens on the road.
She’s got Lewis, Heap, Rice & Mc Gahee
And of course there’s Joe.

She wasn’t worried about a man named Brady,
Or Edelman or even Randy Moss.
Although the odds were stacked against us,
She was praying for a New England loss.

So on Sunday when the Ravens went to Foxborough,
This lady had much more than a hunch,
That her team could play like a family…
That’s the way we beat the Brady Bunch!
